HIA 2012 - Online registration is now open
Quebec City will host the 12th International Conference on health impact assessment (HIA) from August 29 to 31, 2012. The conference aims to advance HIA practice in light of new knowledge, to prove its relevance, and to simulate its use in various public and private decision-making contexts. It is intended for all people whose decisions and actions may have an impact on health. Online registration is now open for all.

WHO European Healthy Cities Business and Technical Conference
This conference of the WHO European Healthy Cities Network will be developed around five thematic strands : 1) Early life to healthy ageing, 2) Creating resilient and sustainable communities, 3) Working together across sectors and levels of government and with civil society, 4) Tackling the social determinants and the health divide: are we making progress? 5 ) Healthy urban environment and design. The conference will be held in St Petersburg on June 14-16, 2012.

Finland takes important steps to restrict alcohol marketing
On May 3, the Finnish Minister of Health presented a draft bill that would prohibit advertising of mild alcoholic beverages outdoors and in public premises. They could still be advertised at points of sale and in restaurants. Advertising of spirits is already prohibited. Alcohol advertising would also be prohibited on TV and radio before 23:00. The bill should be submitted to the Parliament during the 2012 spring session.

More health departments nationwide embracing social media
Social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube offer health professionals the ability to deliver public health messages directly and quickly. A survey in March found that 56% of American states use Facebook to communicate, as do 53% of local health departments.

Making the Connection: Linking Policies to Improve Public Safety with Preventing Childhood Obesity
Leadership for Healthy Communities, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, hosted this webinar on April 26, 2012, to discuss successful strategies to address both public safety and childhood obesity. The webinar is now available on line. The strategies discussed include maintaining and providing safe access to parks and improving conditions that allow for safe active transport.

The aim of this report from the National Collaborating Centre for Healthy Public Policy is to introduce public health actors to the issues surrounding citizen participation in health impact assessment (HIA). It examines the principal arguments in favour of citizen participation and addresses some of the obstacles and risks involved.

Researchers from the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program partnered with members of the City of New Haven government and the local organization DataHaven to think about ways to make it easier for people to walk, run or bicycle in a safe environment around the Route 34 East Corridor. This report describes their recommendations.

A road diet is a technique to reduce the number of lanes on a roadway to provide safe space for pedestrians and cyclists. This health impact assessment looks at a number of questions to support decisions related to the implementation of a road diet in Spartanburg, including safety, opportunities for physical activity and air quality.

Health Impact Assessment of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure Deployment in Illinois
This health impact assessment (HIA) evaluates the potential health impacts of the deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) for residential customers in the Commonwealth Edison service territory in Illinois. It highlights the health and safety aspects of AMI for consideration by the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) as it reviews proposed AMI deployment plans, with the aim of minimizing the likelihood that consumers, especially those from households that struggle to pay utility bills, will be harmed.
