    Data Linkage for Better Public Policy
    This conference is hosted by the current director of The International Health Data Linkage Network, which facilitates communication between centres that specialize in data linkage and users of the linked data. Taking place in Vancouver from April 28 to 30, 2014, the conference will highlight what is happening in the world of linked population-based data as it applies to public policy regarding the health of populations. Abstracts for posters, presentations and panel discussions may be submitted between September 9 and November 1, 2013.

    2013 Comprehensive Health Impact Assessment Training Course
    The Institute of Public Health in Ireland has developed a comprehensive Health Impact Assessment (HIA) training course for those who wish to develop skills and competencies in this area. This 3-day training course gives participants' knowledge and skills so they can plan for and conduct HIA across a range of settings. Online applications are now open for the next course, which will take place from September 23 to 25, 2013, in Belfast.

    Over the past decade, partners have implemented, with the financial support of the MSSS, the j'Arrête telephone line, the j'Arrête Internet site and more than 150 quit smoking centers. Professional associations in health have benefited from scientific support from the Institut national de santé publique (INSPQ) to optimize counseling practices. And pharmacological smoking cessation aids are reimbursed by the public prescription drug insurance plan. This report outlines the results of each of these initiatives, and many others.

    The link between exposure to ultraviolet radiation and its effects on health is well documented. Aiming to protect young people from 0 to 18 years old, this literature review focuses on prevention interventions aimed at this age group. The authors undertook a description and critical analysis of 78 interventions undertaken between 1990 and 2005 in Quebec, Canada and internationally. A number of the issues identified in the review will be addressed in a provincial action plan for the prevention of skin cancer.

    From policy to practice: implementation of physical activity and food policies in schools
    In this study, published in the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity, authors interviewed 50 school informants to examine the factors associated with the implementation of the mandated Daily Physical Activity and Food and Beverage Sales in Schools guidelines. They conclude that the Diffusion of Innovations Model provides an organizational framework for planning interventions. They also note that policy makers need to monitor whether schools are able to implement the guidelines, support schools struggling with implementation, and document the impact of the guidelines on students? behaviours.

    The State of Food and Agriculture 2013 (SOFA)
    Entitled Food Systems for Better Nutrition, this report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlights the burden of malnutrition in the world and emphasizes that every aspect of the food system must align to support good nutrition. While a single intervention in isolation is therefore unlikely to have a significant impact within such a complex system, interventions that consider food systems as a whole are more likely to achieve positive nutritional outcomes.

    Global nutrition policy review - What does it take to scale up nutrition action?
    WHO conducted a review of the presence and implementation of nutrition policies in countries in order to identify gaps. This report summarizes the outcome of the analysis, conducted in 123 countries and territories. More than 90% of the responding countries have policies and programmes that cover issues such as undernutrition, obesity and diet-related NCDs, infant and young child nutrition, and vitamins and minerals. Many of the gaps were in the design and content of some policies and programmes, in nutrition governance, in policy implementation, and in monitoring and evaluation.

    A Health Impact Assessment of the New Britain-Hartford Busway
    This health impact assessment (HIA) published by the Health Equity Alliance in the US seeks to better understand how the New Britain-Hartford Busway in Connecticut will impact the vulnerable populations along its route, in both positive and negative ways. It finds that employment possibilities offered by reliable transportation could have a positive effect on the health of residents, but that gentrification could pose a threat to area residents and businesses.

    Climate change and health: a tool to estimate health and adaptation costs
    In order to cope with the emerging threat posed by climate change, authorities must evaluate current impacts and the vulnerability of their health systems and prepare to take appropriate measures. The WHO prepared this economic analysis tool to support health adaptation planning in Member States. It is based on a review of the science and will enable early adaptation to help control costs.

    Cross-country analysis of the institutionalization of Health Impact Assessment
    This WHO report describes and compares the institutionalization of HIA in nine (mainly middle- and high-income) countries and the European Union to gain a better understanding of the enabling and limiting factors that could then contribute to the identification of strategies for wider and more effective implementation of HIA. One recommendation is to institute a global network of centres to support HIA practice.

    Canadian Data: Looking back, moving forward ? Call for papers
    The Canadian Research Data Centre Network (CRDCN),2013 Conference will take place in Waterloo, Ontario on October 3&4, 2013, with preconference workshops on the 2nd. This year's conference will focus on the importance of having access to high quality data for academic research and policy analysis. Deadline to submit a paper or a poster is July 18, 2013.
